Edge Protection Classifications
A structure must be able to withstand the forces that a temporary edge protection systems is designed for. Temporary Edge protection systems are not be suitable should angle of the structure be greater than 60° or more than 45° and the falling height should be no more than 5m. The structure will determine the class of edge protection used , based on the building incline, level of containment, and also the spanning requirements of the system. The general requirement of all Temporary Edge protection systems must be at a minimum of 1.0m in height.
Classification of temporary edge protection systems
Class A
Provides protection in resistance to static loads only; based on the need to:
- Support a person leaning on the protection or provide a handrail of some description when walking near it; arrest a person who is walking or falling towards the system
- Should not be used on inclines greater than 10°
- Centres should be 470mm as a maximum if using a rail
- Centres should be 250mm as a maximum if using a mesh panel
Class B
Provides protection in resistance to static loads and low dynamic forces only; based on the need to:
- Support a person leaning on the protection or provide a handrail of some description when walking near it;
- Arrest a person who is walking or falling towards the system; and
- Arrest the fall if a person was to slide down a sloping surface
- Can be used in up to 30° without limitation of fall height; and
- Can be used in up to 60° with a falling height of less than 2m
- Centres should be 250mm as a maximum
Class C
Provides protection to resistance in high dynamic forces based on the need to:
- Arrest the fall of a person sliding down a steeply sloping surface
- Can be used from 45° to 60° with a fall height of less than 5m
- Centres should be 100mm as a maximum
- Toe boards at least 150mm maximum gap 20mm
Bespoke Edge Protection Systems
On many UK construction sites it has been common place for traditional triple rail scaffold edge protection systems will provide protection for workers from a fall with a handrail, however this type of system does not meet the new BS EN 13374 Standards as the system does not have sufficient supports on large bay warehouses and many other structures. The only system available for this type of application is 'Combisafe Net Barrier' System, however this system does not have a fixed handrail to prevent falls. Projects which have had Net Barrier edge protection system installed by HASL have had questions raised by HSE as this system poses a potential fall arrest situation for a worker who stumbles, and under the hierarchy of risk management, fall arrest situations must be avoided if possible.
